Would you like a simian army in your cloud application? This is one seriously cool discussion, it’s DotNet Rocks episode 905, Chaos Monkey Makes Apps Better with Eric Boyd.
The Netflix Chaos Monkey runs around randomly shutting off instances and services, creating chaos. This sounds totally crazy but it’s crazy smart. The purpose is to test that an application can handle failure. If an instance or service shut down the application still have to work on other instances. Netflix run this in production and that might not be recommended for other applications but at times Netflix stand for a third (!) of the total internet traffic and you can’t reproduce that in a test environment.
In the Netflix github repository, SimianArmy, there’s also a janitor monkey that will clean up unused instances.
The monkey’s will rule the world… at least the cloud.
